Festivities begin with the unveiling of The Grand America’s Holiday Window Display on November 24. This year, the displays will feature “Songs of the Season,” bringing to life 17 carol-inspired windows throughout the hotel in collaboration with local artists, artisans and designers.
Additional seasonal traditions will ignite the holiday spirit in guests and locals alike, including Santa’s Grand Afternoon Tea, Breakfast With Santa, elaborate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day lunches and dinners, and a life-size gingerbread house hand-crafted by The Grand’s resident pastry chefs.
“The Grand America is one of the most magical places to celebrate the holidays,” said Chris Erickson, manager of The Grand America. “From our towering Christmas tree, to the enchanting window stroll, to festive dining events with Santa himself, The Grand becomes a true winter wonderland to be enjoyed all season long.”

Sinclair Oil’s Dinosaur Thanksgiving Day Flight Kicks Off Centennial Celebration
November 10, 2015
To celebrate Sinclair Oil’s 100th anniversary, the company’s iconic DINO™ balloon returns to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade® for the first time in nearly 40 years.
Sinclair Oil’s iconic green DINO™ [pronounced DIE-no] balloon returns to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade® this year after a nearly 40-year absence — and just in time for Sinclair’s centennial celebration in 2016.
In 1916, Harry F. Sinclair formed Sinclair Oil Corporation out of the assets of 11 small petroleum companies. By the late 1920s, it was the seventh largest oil company in the United States. In the 1970s, the Holding family bought the company and formed the current, family-owned Sinclair Oil Corporation. Today, Sinclair is among the oldest continuous names in the oil business, and the green dinosaur is one of the most recognized icons in Americana.
More than 3.5 million people in New York and over 50 million television viewers will watch the legendary Sinclair DINO™ take flight over the streets of New York City on Thanksgiving Day. A fan favorite in the late 1960s and ‘70s, DINO™ joins the line of march as the only life-sized balloon in the Parade.
- Measuring 72-feet long, 24-feet wide, 36-feet tall, the balloon is the actual size of an Apatosaurus.
- To give DINO™ his unique color, 50 gallons of green paint were used.
- Sinclair Oil’s DINO™ first appeared in the 1963 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade® and remained a fan favorite every year up until 1976.
- In 1975, the Sinclair dinosaur balloon was so popular he even became an honorary member of the American Museum of Natural History.
- DINO™ was the premiere exhibit at the New York World’s Fair in 1939, as a 70-foot green dinosaur in the Sinclair’s “Dinoland Pavilion.”
“We are delighted that our iconic Sinclair Dinosaur is returning to New York City and participating in the world-renowned Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. With our upcoming centennial anniversary, we feel extremely fortunate to have such a timeless brand symbol that is loved by Americans of all ages,” said Ross Matthews, chairman and CEO of Sinclair Oil Corporation.
The DINO™ balloon will require approximately 70 balloon handlers who have been trained for the job. Of these handlers, seven are Sinclair employees or family members; the others are Macy’s employees, friends and family. Sinclair Oil’s featured handlers include:
- Jay Mick (Utah), TITLE crude oil division
- Sue Sharp (Utah), VP of Safety and her husband, NAME
- Daniel Matthews (STATE), son of Ross Matthews, chairman and CEO
- Ron Mrocek (Minnesota), VP of Brand Marketing and Brand Management
- Johnny Adams (Utah), Lube Coordinator
- Peter Johnson (Wyoming), President of Sinclair Oil
